Family and Consumer Scientists are impacted by the trends and issues discussed in class on a day-to-day basis, specifically technology. Technology has changed tremendously over the years, even in just the last five there have been many advancements. I will speak more in depth about Interior Design and how this profession has been impacted by technology.
There have been many computer programs that have been developed to enhance artwork, room designs, and final presentations. This is definitely a positive impact in the design world because we work right up until the final deadline and need specific tools to fix any last minute errors. Hopefully there are not very many, but we are all human, and having that
technology to back our work up really helps. Originally, architecture and design firms utilized hand drafting tools to sketch out floor plans, perspectives, and detail drawings. Throughout the last ten years, companies have been changing their resources to utilize computers and technology in aiding with the design process. I have learned that companies are using a mixture of hand drafting and computers. There are many elderly designers and architects still working in their craft, and they were taught one way while a new generation has been taught through technology. Everyone in this field has been impacted by technology in many ways, both positively and negatively.
Apparel Design, Fashion Merchandising, Residential Property Management, and Interior Design all coincide with each other in one way or another. Fashion and Interiors are persuaded and evolving every day due to consumer wants and needs. Trends and issues change those needs and wants as well. These four disciplines can work together to address the concerns and excitement about technology. Through Interior Design there are many professional organizations that one can join to educate themselves about new advancements in technology. The other three disciplines offer workshops, conferences, and product trial events for people who practice that craft and discipline. This is one way these areas of specialists can work together to learn and understand technology in these fields.
As a specialist in Interior Design, I see myself working with all of the Family and Consumer Science Core Concepts, basic human needs, individual well being, family strengths, and community vitality through the design process and ideas behind Interior Design. Designing an aesthetically pleasing space that focuses on the needs of the client or user is the main priority during the design and implementation process. That is why it is very important to understand the FCS Core Concepts, to be able to implement those ideas when working with a future client.
